DESIGN PHILOSOPHY/MISSION/VISION

The key interest of TULLL is to support and contribute to lifelong learning and the innovation of the Chinese educational system from kindergarten to university by establishing a creative learning environment across ages and disciplines, based on the importance of a new set of 21st century skills centered around creativity and innovation.

TULLL aims to inspire and develop future lifelong learner. Lifelong learning is the ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. With an emphasis on early age creative learning experience, TULLL will create learning environment, design learning activities, and develop learning technologies that stimulate the sense of creativity as well as improve the engagement of learning. TULLL will conduct researches on students’ learning behaviors and further develop creative learning methods based on the daily activities and carefully designed learning experiences. Along the design and research process, TULLL will convene decision makers, educators, innovators and critical stakeholders to innovate with a broader scope and large scale.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

The design principles are all human-centered, including three features:

  • Functionality: open-ended & flexible
    • Keep space/furnitures flexible as building blocks and not permanently fixed; keep evolving; “it’s ok to change or experiment with”
    • Diverse space for multiple uses, e.g. single work, team collaboration, and openly sharing
    • Mix of specifically labeled spaces and unclearly labeled spaces
  • Visual style: unfinished & raw
    • Create a raw and incomplete visual/touching feeling
    • Use color white in the space as the source of imagination
    • Use colors as visual stimulators and space separators
    • Keep visual consistency (color & texture)
  • Supporting system: friendly & strict
    • Appropriately use slogans as prompts/culture influencers (“just beyond crazy is fabulous” & “there is only make, do it” “show don’t tell”  “student’s profile photos”)
    • Use rule boards to clarify the mandatory rules and don’ts
    • Cultivate spontaneity - friendly enough to get students spontaneously mingled into the environment or naturally collaborate with others
    • Richness of elements/textures/materials/spaces
